Worried About Your Child's Mental health? 8 Signs to Watch For

Many mental health concerns first begin in childhood or adolescence. The earlier we notice the signs, the earlier we can offer support and tools that can make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

As caregivers, you know your children better than anyone. But mental health challenges in kids and teens don’t always look the way we expect. Below are a few signs that your child or teen may be struggling:

  1. Changes in mood or behaviour that seem out of character
  2. Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy
  3. Frequent stomach aches or headaches with no clear medical cause
  4. Changes in sleep—trouble falling asleep, waking up often, or sleeping too much
  5. Increased irritability or anger
  6. Avoiding school or other activities they once managed fine
  7. Excessive worry or perfectionism
  8. Talking about feeling hopeless, worthless, or like a burden

Sometimes these changes are brief and tied to a life transition. But if they persist for a few weeks or begin to impact your child’s daily life, it might be time to seek professional support.
